Hi! My name is Denise, & I live in the beautiful city of Perth, Australia. I am a qualified doctor but have since left the medical field to pursue nutrition. I am a dietetic student with an immense passion towards human nutrition & an insatiable interest in food & healthy cooking. I spend a lot of time in my kitchen creating and trying new recipes, and I absolutely love sharing food with family and friends.
My enthusiasm towards health & nutrition stemmed from personal life experiences, as well as prior work experiences as a doctor.
As an adolescent, I struggled with my own body image. I was extremely paranoid about my weight & what I ate. I became obsessed with achieving THE ideal physique, & my relationship with food was terrible! I exercised excessively & felt extremely guilty after every meal. It wasn't until my early 20's when I realised that the negativity revolving around body weight and food I was battling with consumed me. Things took a turn for the better when I started reading & learning more about health & nutrition & trying my hands at cooking & experimenting with food in the kitchen. Food turned into a source of nutrient which nourished my body; it was no longer the enemy. Until now, I look forward to meal times everyday and have never felt more at ease with the food choices I make. My preoccupation with excessive exercising have also ceased. Nonetheless, I still enjoy physical activities & strongly believe in the importance of staying active.
Throughout my journey in the medical field, I have encountered many illnesses, some of which are nutrition-related. To name a few, these includes hypertension, diabetes, high levels of cholesterol & gout. The prevalence of these conditions can be reduced via preventative measures, one of which is nutrition education. Furthermore, nutrition-related medical conditions are to an extent controllable & modifiable through good dietary habits. The power of nutrition is in fact illustrated in a quote by Hippocrates which says 'Let food be thy medicine & medicine be thy food.'
DENISE CHEWS NUTRITION is a personal project which has finally made its way to your fingertips. I am absolutely excited about sharing my ideas, thoughts, wholesome recipes & what I've learnt so far with all of you! Healthy eating is about finding healthier alternatives while still keeping the culinary enjoyment intact. Remember, it is NOT associated with strict food restrictions, fad-dieting or self-doubt. As you take small, positive steps towards making these healthy swaps, you will begin to see that eating whole & natural foods can be really fun, beneficial and down right delicious. My primary focus is to help you feel happy & confident about your food choices.
Practicing mindful eating & having a positive outlook on what you feed your body will eventually become a habit. Start the journey with small changes, one day at a time. Invite loved ones to join you, have a cookout at your place & get messy in the kitchen, or simply try new foods & embrace flavours from different cultures!
I hope that by following along and growing with me towards a healthy lifestyle, you will feel incredible, empowered & be a role model to those around you. You deserve only the best.
